Ramsey, Founder & CEO 8/20/2024

Simpson College’s Esports program has rapidly positioned itself as a powerhouse in the collegiate esports landscape, thanks to visionary leadership and a dedicated group of student-athletes. Since its establishment in 2021, the program has achieved remarkable success, competing at the highest levels and earning national recognition.

Leadership That Drives Success

The program is led by Hubert Whan Tong, a passionate coach with a background as a collegiate player. Since taking the helm, Whan Tong has transformed Simpson College into a formidable contender in the esports arena. His leadership was instrumental in guiding the team to significant achievements, including a third-place finish at the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) postseason tournament for Valorant and securing a top 32 spot at a national Super Smash Bros. competition .

Under Whan Tong’s direction, Simpson College’s Esports program doesn’t just aim to win games; it focuses on the holistic development of its athletes. The program prioritizes academic success, personal growth, and long-term health, as evidenced by its partnership with Bye Blue Light to provide players with advanced eyewear that mitigates the effects of blue light exposure (Bye Blue Light).

Student-Athletes Making Waves

The program’s success is fueled by a talented and dedicated group of students who are as competitive in the classroom as they are in the gaming arena. One such standout is Sid Hudson, a information systems graduate who brought his competitive spirit from traditional sports into the esports world. Hudson has become a key figure on the team, being the team's head analyst and helping elevate the program’s reputation. Graduating in 2024 he takes his talents to another top program in Converse University in South Carolina.
