Purdue University Northwest (PNW) has rapidly become a key player in the collegiate Esports arena, building a program that is both competitive and inclusive. Spearheaded by a visionary coach and driven by talented students, PNW Esports is making waves not just within the university, but across the entire Midwest. The PNW Esports program was launched in 2020 as the first public university in Indiana to offer Esports at the varsity level. Since its inception, the program has grown from a small team into a robust community of over 140 students, including 40 varsity athletes and 100 club participants. This growth mirrors the nationwide expansion of collegiate Esports, a trend that has seen universities increasingly recognize the importance of gaming as both a competitive sport and a tool for student engagement. At the heart of PNW Esports is its state-of-the-art infrastructure. The university boasts dedicated Esports arenas on both its Hammond and Westville campuses, equipped with cutting-edge gaming technology. These facilities are not only home to the varsity teams but also serve as hubs for student recreation and local high school engagement, positioning PNW as a leader in fostering regional Esports talent. Leading the charge is head coach Justin Bragg, whose expertise and passion have been instrumental in shaping PNW's Esports program. Bragg, a former top 10 League of Legends player in North America, brings a deep understanding of the game and a strategic mindset to his role. Before joining PNW, Bragg successfully launched and coached the Esports program at Illinois College, where he led the team to impressive victories over major universities. Under Bragg’s leadership, PNW Esports has not only grown in size but also in competitive stature. His approach to coaching emphasizes leadership, accountability, and the importance of academic success, drawing parallels between traditional sports and Esports in terms of teamwork and discipline. Bragg’s efforts extend beyond the university as he actively works to build connections with local high schools, offering resources and mentorship to budding Esports enthusiasts. Central to the success of PNW's League of Legends team are Dalton "Prank" Swaino and Felix "Tehpwner" Barrera, two standout players who have made significant contributions to the team’s achievements. Dalton Swaino, a graduate student from Round Hill, VA, has been a key figure in the League of Legends lineup. Known for his strong lane presence and strategic gameplay, Dalton has helped lead the team to numerous victories. His high-level play and in-depth game knowledge are invaluable assets to PNW’s competitive edge. Felix Barrera, from Munster, IN, is a senior who plays the support role in League of Legends. Felix’s tactical approach and leadership on the field have been critical in enabling his teammates to perform at their best. His experience and consistency have earned him a respected place within the team, making him a cornerstone of PNW’s Esports program. With a solid foundation, a dedicated coach, and talented players, the future of PNW Esports looks incredibly promising. The program is not only about winning games but also about building a community that supports academic and personal growth. As more students join and the program continues to evolve, PNW is set to become a dominant force in collegiate Esports, both in the Midwest and beyond. For those interested in joining or following the rise of PNW Esports, the doors are wide open. Whether you’re a prospective student, a local high school player, or simply a fan of competitive gaming, PNW Esports offers a vibrant and inclusive environment where you can grow, compete, and succeed. The Birth and Growth of PNW Esports
